Review TMNT Movie 1

The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was released in 1990 and was directed by Steve Barron. The main plot of the movie loosely follows the first comic book while taking a few elements from the cartoon series as well.

The movie starred Josh Pais as Rapahel, Michaelan Sisti as Michaelangelo, Leif Tilden as Donatello, and David Forman as Leonardo. While these were the actors who wore the turtle suits in the movie it was Robbie Rist (Mikey), Corey Feldman (Donnie), and Brian Tochi (Leo) voicing the characters. Josh Pais was the only actor to suit up and voice their character. Judith Hoag portrayed April O'Neil and Elias Koteas masked up as Casey Jones. Kevin Clash of Elmo fame voiced and puppeteered Splinter.

One of the highest independent grossing films ever fans of the first movie define it as the best TMNT made and compare all future movies to this one. While I do feel this movie is a higher quality film I feel using it as a rubric for all future movies in unfair.

All of the costumes and puppets used in this movie were made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Read more about the process to create these creatures here. http://mutantooze.org/wiki/movie-i-1990-about-the-creatures/

The movie was a success and spawned two sequels. Both of which will be getting their own 30 Days of TMNT post!
